How long has it been when you’d last lived, or at least tried living without your phone?
Have you ever asked yourself this question: “What am I gonna do without my smart-phone?”. Indeed, that’s a difficult question, and the answer would be an obvious no. Now this may sound frivolous right.
So why is it so difficult to keep your phone aside and not get tempted to look at your phone's notifications?
Humans are like gossip birds. It is evident from the ancient times that we humans tend to form connections with other human beings as a part of survival instinct; because without communication, without kinship and associations with other groups, human existence wouldn’t have been possible. It is an innate and inborn tendency of humans to connect and form associations, likeness, and status in society.
But now the question arises: “Why do we use social media?”
Is it for earning money? Is it for making connections with new people? Is it for getting those likes and followers on Instagram and Facebook? Is it to share those WhatsApp forwards to friends and groups to receive appreciation for your taste in humour? Or is it for validation, for acceptance in society? All these manifest into a virtual peer pressure, and ultimately stress.
The answer could vary accordingly! But have you ever wondered, or ever thought of a world outside your phone?
We are all trapped inside a simulated, virtual world; a world where reality seems unrealistically boring and unsatisfying, a reality where the happiness is measured in terms of the number of selfies you take, while the income measured by the brands you wear or the places you visit, or the food you eat and the friends and people you hang around with.
We are the best versions of ourselves on social media; isn’t it true? When we look ourselves, when we look at our pictures, the masqueraded smile that we wear, the fake friends we surround ourselves with, the online and virtual people we connect with; we know that deep inside us, behind that hidden smile and beauty filters, we all know that it’s not real, there's nothing behind it, but rather loneliness. What could be more unrealistic than this? It does place a dagger into our brains.
So why not we introspect ourselves, find our true purpose, bond with real people: your family, your siblings, your pet(s), and the friends who always stood by your side!
While practicing the popularly used term among millennia, the social media distancing, hours do turn into weeks and weeks into months. So why not enjoy this time! Our brains need this respite from social media.
So along with social distancing, why not try social media distancing too!
